Sustainable Viticulture: Integrating Fleurtai and Soreli into Lison Classico

In modern viticulture, sustainability is essential both in the winery and the vineyard to minimize environmental impact. The introduction of “fungi-resistant” grape varieties offers a powerful solution to reduce agrochemical use, including copper accumulation in organic farming.

This study examines the potential of Fleurtai and Soreli—resistant varieties derived from crossing Tocai Friulano with Kozma 20-3—to be integrated into the prestigious DOCG Lison Classico appellation.

Key Research Findings:

  • Quality Consistency: Sensory evaluations by expert panels confirm that Fleurtai and Soreli produce wines with qualitative characteristics equivalent to the traditional Tocai Friulano.
  • Typicality Preserved: Statistical analysis showed no significant differences in the “bitter almond” after-taste, a hallmark organoleptic trait of the region’s traditional wines.
  • Enhanced Longevity: These resistant varieties can increase the freshness, acidity, and longevity of wine when used in blends.
  • Consumer Protection: Utilizing these varieties allows for “low-impact viticulture,” protecting the environment and residents in sensitive areas near vineyards.

By blending tradition with innovation, winemakers can maintain the territory’s identity while embracing a more sustainable future.
